Thiago Motta was born in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil. He is of Italian descent, holding Italian citizenship through his paternal grandfather.

Club Career

Barcelona

Motta joined Barcelona’s youth academy in 1999 at the age of 17. He progressed through the ranks and eventually made his first-team debut in 2001. During his time at Barcelona, he won two La Liga titles (2004–05, 2005–06) and the UEFA Champions League (2005–06). Recurring injuries plagued his time with the club.

Atlético Madrid

In late August 2007, Motta signed a one-year contract with Atlético Madrid. His time there was also marked by injuries, limiting his appearances.

Genoa

Motta joined Genoa in September 2008. He experienced a successful season, becoming a regular starter and scoring a career-best six goals.

Inter Milan
